Clean Indoor Air Saves Money

A smoke free law in Kansas is a no-cost solution to reducing health care costs in Kansas, but the benefits don’t stop there. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment estimates that Kansans would save $20 million annually when heart attack rates are reduced, which leads to fewer hospitalizations.

Governor Calls for Statewide Smoking Restrictions

TOPEKA — The governor today pledged to “strongly” push the 2010 Legislature to enact a statewide smoking ban, something the body has roundly rejected for at least two consecutive years.

Gov. Mark Parkinson also said he is considering proposing an increase in the state tobacco tax depending on how things look when he presents his budget recommendations to the Legislature in January.

Four out of five Kansans choose not to smoke, yet they may face the harmful effects of secondhand smoke simply by going out to eat. Why do we accommodate the one in five Kansans who do smoke, at the expense of the majority who don’t?  Simply put, the Kansas legislature has not acted on this issue which is supported by a majority of constituents.

Jake Lowen Joins Clean Air Kansas

Jake Lowen has joined the Clean Air Kansas team as campaign coordinator.  Jake previously worked as the director of the Wichita Labor Federation and was actively involved in the successful campaign to increase the minimum wage in Kansas.  His background also includes grassroots advocacy for the American Cancer Society in Kansas. Jake will office in Topeka and coordinate the campaign that drives grassroots support of a clean indoor air bill in Kansas in 2010. 

More Work To Be Done - Guest Editorial in Sun Publications 6/10/09

Sixty-nine restaurants and bars including a retirement center and hardware store have purchased smoking licenses in Kansas City, Kan., that allow businesses to expose their employees and patrons to the dangers of secondhand smoke. The Unified Government approved this ordinance in a county with the highest incidence in the state of lung cancer deaths.
